The presentation will explore the tensions and opportunities for reconciling Indigenous self-determination with extractive activities in Canada, emphasizing the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). Thierry Rodon will examine case studies such as the Squamish Nation’s community-led process for an LNG terminal and uranium exploration in Quebec, highlighting the growing role of Indigenous governance in resource development decision-making. The talk will advocate for understanding FPIC as a co-determination mechanism that transcends mere consultation and industry agreements, aiming to genuinely engage with Indigenous rights alongside state sovereignty.
